First let me refresh your memory concerning the percentage a healthy amount of fat in an average men or woman represents:
MEN: %fat:
Vital: 2-4%
Athletic: 6-13%
Good Condition: 14-17%
Overweight: 18-25%
Obese: 25% +
Woman: %fat:
Vital: 10-12%
Athletic: 14-20%
Good Condition: 21-24%
Overweight: 25-31%
Obese: 31% +
There are several methods to measure fat mass: skin fold thickness measurements, underwater weighing and bioelectrical impedance (scales/ body fat calculators). You should aim to fall under the categories “good condition” or Athletic (depending on your activity level).
Everybody knows that practicing sports in combination with a healthy diet is the key to weight management. One does not go without the other!
I cannot repeat enough that a regular fitness program not only contributes to reducing excessive body fat, but also:
- Reduces arterial tension
- Heightens the strength and improves the functioning of the heart
- Heightens our lung capacity
- Protects against osteoporosis
- Improves our reflexes
- Boosts self esteem
- Helps against insomnia and stress
- Combats depression
A very effective way for non-active people to start a fitness program is to walk at least 30 minutes each morning on an empty stomach. An empty stomach scientifically has been proven to oblige the body to burn stocked calories first. If you feel even more motivated you can try for a jog or you can jump on your bike. They key rule is to do start your day actively without any food intake. Of course, a glass of water is allowed.
Some other simple methods to burn some extra calories and to improve your figure are – as we all very well know, but need to have repeated a zillion times - are:
- Walking to the grocery store instead of driving
- Getting off the bus a station earlier and walk the last part on your route
- Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
- Walk to the water fountain each time you’d like to drink a glass of water instead of putting the bottle next to you
- Prepare your lunchbox at home, and use the latter part of your lunch break to take a 20 minute walk
- Start a vegetable garden, not only can you eat healthy home produced high energetic bio foods, but gardening is one of the best ways to burn calories

Basically you should eat a lot of vegetables, fruits, light soups, low fat yoghurt and slow carbohydrates (wholegrain rice, pasta, bread, dried vegetables) and avoid foods which contain a lot of fat and refined sugars.
Homemade vegetable and fruit juices are an excellent way to complete a detox program; fanatics might even replace a complete meal by such juices or you can even have a juice only day. But remember DEPRIVING YOUR BODY IS AS BAD AS EXCESSESS.
